Finances

The Fraternity’s first rule of financial management is that every chapter is self-supporting: money management is a chapter responsibility.

Chapter Dues

The chapter decides its own dues, and this fee structure is incorporated into the chapter’s bylaws. Dues include all chapter expenditures as Kappa Alpha Theta does not allow assessment of members, meaning after a member pays dues, no additional fees will be owed throughout the semester.

Charter Members

Dues for charter members will be set by the Fraternity’s budget district director after a better understanding of campus culture and conversations with fraternity/sorority life staff. More information is forthcoming regarding dues for charter members.

Initiation

All members of Kappa Alpha Theta are required to pay a $194 initiation fee and a one-time facility fee dependent on the housing costs specific to the chapter.

Chapter Finance Terms

Chapter Dues

This fee is set by the chapter and should be sufficient to cover all chapter activities and expenditures. This includes costs for all chapter business, social events, mandatory recruitment clothing, and gifts. This cost is all-inclusive; chapter members will not have any additional expenditures.

One-Time Facility Fee

A facility fee is established by the chapter’s facility corporation board (FCB). Each member of the college chapter is required to pay a facility fee to cover the usage and expenses of the Beta Sigma Chapter house. This is a one-time fee for all new and transfer members.

Note: There will be a facility usage fee that is assessed annually for all members starting in fall 2027.

Initiation Fee

This one-time fee is paid by new members to the Fraternity. This fee must be paid in full to the chapter by initiation.

Per Capita Fee

This fee is paid annually by initiated members to the Fraternity to help fund operational support to the college chapter. This fee is only billed once in the fall to active members and members studying abroad and will begin in fall 2027 for Beta Sigma Chapter.

National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) Fee

This annual fee is paid by new members and initiated members to NPC.

SMU Panhellenic Dues

SMU Panhellenic dues are paid by members and are directed to the College Panhellenic Council. These funds help support the operations and programs of SMU’s College Panhellenic.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kappa Alpha Theta's Assessment Policy?

An assessment is any mandatory payment, in addition to dues and fees, required by members. The cost for members to attend all social events or mandatory clothing must be included in the overall chapter dues. Members should not be expected to pay anything more than the dues and fees stated in the chapter’s bylaws.

What else might I have to pay for during the semester?

As mentioned in the non-assessment policy above, all mandatory payments are included in chapter dues. A member may have additional fees for optional merchandise orders.

How and when are payments collected?

Payments are collected on a payment platform called Billhighway, where members will pay their dues electronically or by check. Billing statements are sent out on the 1st of the month, are due on the 15th, and will be collected at the beginning of each semester.

Payment plan options are also available upon request of the chapter’s finance team.

Will it be more expensive during the first year as a new member?

No, it is mandatory that chapter dues for active and new members are set at the same amount.
