Finances
Chapter Dues
The chapter decides its own dues, and this fee structure is incorporated into the chapter’s bylaws. Dues include all chapter expenditures as Kappa Alpha Theta does not allow assessment of members, meaning after a member pays dues, no additional fees will be owed throughout the semester.
Charter Members
Dues for charter members are set by the Fraternity’s budget district director based on a better understanding of campus culture and conversations with fraternity/sorority life staff.
Initiation
All members of Kappa Alpha Theta are required to pay a $194 initiation fee and a one-time facility fee dependent on the housing costs specific to the chapter.

Chapter Finance Terms
Initiation Fee
This one-time fee is paid by new members to the chapter to fund pledging, initiation, and (where applicable) installation activities on a schedule determined by the chapter, but this fee must be paid in full to the chapter by the new member’s initiation.
Per Capita Fee
This fee is paid annually by initiated members to Kappa Alpha Theta headquarters to help fund volunteer support to the college chapter as well as programming for members and chapters. This fee is only billed once in the fall to active members and members studying abroad.
National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) Fee
This annual fee is paid by new members and initiated members to NPC.
Chapter Dues
This fee is set by the chapter and should be sufficient to cover all chapter activities and expenditures. This includes costs for all social events, mandatory recruitment clothing, and gifts. Chapters may not assess members for extra mandatory activities/expenses.
FHC Facility Fee
A minimum facility fee is established by the Fraternity Housing Corporation (FHC). Each member of a college chapter is required to pay a facility fee, regardless of facility type, to cover the objectives FHC staff set for the chapter.
Michigan Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) Fee
This fee is set by the University of Michigan and is required of all members of the fraternity and sorority community. This fee is paid once per semester and will start in spring 2026 for Eta Chapter.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Kappa Alpha Theta's Assessment Policy?
An assessment is any mandatory payment, in addition to dues and fees, required by members. The cost for members to attend all social events or mandatory clothing must be included in the overall chapter dues. Members should not be expected to pay anything more than the dues and fees stated in the chapter’s bylaws.
What else might I have to pay for during the semester?
As mentioned in the non-assessment policy above, all mandatory payments are included in chapter dues. A member may have additional fees for optional merchandise orders.
How and when are payments collected?
Payments are collected on a payment platform called Billhighway, where members will pay their dues electronically or by check. Billing statements are sent out on the 1st of the month, are due on the 15th, and will be collected at the beginning of each semester.
Payment plan options are also available upon request of the chapter’s finance team.
The Michigan Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) fee will be billed through your Michigan student account by the Fraternity and Sorority Life office.
Will it be more expensive during the first year as a new member?
No, it is mandatory that chapter dues for active and new members are set at the same amount.
